OpenCities has carried out an extensive analysis of economic prospects in the BRIC economies (Brazil, Russia, India and China) using recently published IMF data.

Our findings cast new light on the opportunity that China and India in particular offer to both emerging and mature economies.

Key findings include:

1. China’s economy will overtake that of the USA by 2027, more than two decades ahead of the time that most investment banks were predicting just a couple of years ago.

2. The wealthiest 20% of China’s and India’s populations already exceed the combined total population of the UK’s 6 largest trading partners.

3. The per capita income of the wealthiest 20% in China will overtake US average income as early as 2030.
