OpenCities is advising one of the largest private sector players in the Middle East on the development of economic cities in Saudi Arabia.
Conceived by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority, the economic cities initiative comprises four main components:
- the development of a business friendly environment
- world class infrastructure
- globally competitive business clusters
- the creation of cities, not industrial zones
The largest of these planned developments is King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), the single largest private sector project in the region developed by Emaar the Economic City (Emaar.E.C), a Tadawul-listed company.

The World Bank has published a major report by its Independent Evaluation Department on the performance of World Bank programmes in Middle Income countries. OpenCities was a member of the external advisory panel overseeing the work. The report’s introduction acknowledges the role of OpenCities as a member of the external panel of experts. OpenCities has been appointed to a specialist consultancy panel for the London Development Agency for two years renewable for a further two years.
The appointment followed a rigourous competition in two stages in which over 400 consultancies competed.
